Dustin Poirier picked Max Holloway to be the most skilled opponent he has ever beaten
Dustin Poirier has been a part of the UFC for more than 10 years. He has been a part of many dog fights – in the lightweight as well as the featherweight division.
Poirier has an impressive UFC record of 20 wins and just 5 losses.
In a recent fan Q&A with ESPN+ featuring Laura Sanko, Poirier revealed the most skilled opponent he has ever beaten.
Poirier picked former featherweight champion, Max Holloway, to be the most skilled opponent he has defeated, shunning McGregor completely.
‘The Diamond’ acknowledged Holloway’s tough-as-nails attitude, while also claiming that he had learnt a lot from that fight.
Here is what he had to say:
“Probably Max Holloway…He matched the grit that I bring, which I don’t think is easy to do, and his durability was amazing, he took some heavy shots, I knew he was hurt multiple times, and every time the bell rang, he answered it. He came out ready to scrap and I’m thankful for it, because I learned a lot in that fight.”
Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier have fought twice in the UFC. Once in the featherweight division, way back at UFC 143 in February 2012. Poirier ended up winning the fight via. submission in the very first round.
The second fight, a rematch, was an absolute slugfest. The fight took place at UFC 236 for the interim lightweight title. After five rounds of intense back and forth, Poirier won the fight via. unanimous decision.
It is worth noting that, Holloway has never been knocked out in his entire career.
Conor McGregor still can’t get enough of Dustin Poirier. Despite losing to Poirier, twice in a row, he has been having a go at ‘The Diamond’ on Twitter.
Speaking about the same in the Fan Q&A, Poirier revealed that he was rent-free in McGregor’s head, when asked about his thoughts on McGregor’s Twitter jibes.
“It doesn’t really bother me. I don’t really care. When I think about it, like hindsight – like today I was thinking about it, you know? That guy is probably losing his mind. He can’t really train, he’s got a hurt leg, he’s trying to rehab…Rent free. I’m just living rent free.”
