Dustin Poirier, set to compete in the headline bout of UFC 291 against Justin Gaethje for the vacant BMF championship, has shared his thoughts on the event coinciding with the long-awaited clash between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford in boxing.
Dustin Poirier has given his thoughts on UFC 291 taking place on the same night as the highly anticipated bout between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford. Scheduled for July 29, Poirier’s fight against Gaethje holds the promise of propelling him back into the lightweight title conversation.
However, the simultaneous occurrence of the UFC event and the Spence vs. Crawford clash presents a dilemma for fans. Poirier, a self-professed boxing enthusiast, expressed his disappointment at not being able to watch the fight live.
“I don’t know if it’s gonna affect pay-per-views, I think fans might buy both,” Poirier said. “I’m kinda upset I’m not gonna watch that live, I’m a big boxing fan. To me, this is the Super Bowl.”
Poirier acknowledges the magnitude of the occasion for both events. As he prepares for his own high-stakes fight, Poirier recognizes the significance of the long-awaited collision between Spence and Crawford in the boxing world. The matchup between these two formidable fighters has been eagerly anticipated by fans for years, adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening for combat sports enthusiasts.
Dustin Poirier’s headlining appearance in UFC 291 marks a significant milestone in his career, further solidifying his status as one of the top fighters in the lightweight division. Meanwhile, Spence vs. Crawford represents a monumental clash that boxing fans have longed to witness, as these two talented fighters finally meet in the ring.
As both events unfold simultaneously, fans will be faced with a difficult decision on how to allocate their attention and pay-per-view purchases. Regardless of their choice, the night of July 29 promises to be an exhilarating one for combat sports fans, with two marquee matchups captivating audiences across the realms of mixed martial arts and boxing.
On July 29, UFC 291 will feature a rematch between lightweights Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. The fight is for the BMF Championship, a largely ceremonial title. When Jorge Masvidal beat Nate Diaz to become champion in 2019, it was a one-and-done deal. The UFC president has given his reasoning for the return of the championship.
Dana White discussed the reason behind bringing back the belt at the UFC Vegas 73 post-fight press conference. He stated:
“Masvidal retired, so we put the BMF up. You have no idea how many of these fighters want to fight for the BMF title. They all want to fight for that belt, so- it’s fun, it’s different. So, we’ll do it again.“
“I don’t know. I mean, when you think about coming up with it the first time, those two [Jorge Masvidal & Nate Diaz] were the right guys. [And] so are these. These are the two right guys for that, too.
“Whether that things in play or not in play, that fight is what it is. But everybody wants that belt. So, what the hell?”
