Dustin Poirier open to moving to welterweight division

Dustin Poirier is yet to make his welterweight division debut

Dustin Poirier is on the cusp of greatness. The UFC lightweight is set to challenge Charles Oliveira next for the lightweight title.

The dominance he asserted over Conor McGregor in his last two fights just showed how much ‘The Diamond’ has improved over the years.

Having started out as a lightweight, Poirier moved to the featherweight division for quite an extensive period of time, before a bad defeat against McGregor at UFC 178, made him return to the lightweight division.

However, Poirier is someone who walks around at a much heavier weight during off-season days.

‘The Diamond’ gets at least 25 pounds heavier than the lightweight limit. Yet, he has never fought in the welterweight division (170lbs). Not even once.

In a recent exclusive ESPN+ Q&A featuring Laura Sanko, Poirier stated that he was open to a move to the welterweight division.

Now that his metabolism is pretty fine, Poirier was more than ready to jump to another division:

He said:

“Of course, I would. Those are some big guys, man. Those are some big guys. But, we’ll see. I definitely think I can fight at 170. Honestly, now at 55 [lightweight] my metabolism is kinda caught up. But when I was cutting to 145, between fights I would get a lot heavier than I do now. I just think my metabolism was getting messed up holding on to a lot of weight. I would shoot up to 190lbs when I was fighting 45 [featherweight]. Now, I think 182 is kinda the max I get up to. I think I could fight at 170 as well.”

Dustin Poirier to face Nate Diaz at welterweight?

Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz have been going back and forth in recent times, triggering talks of a possible fight between the two.

The two were set to fight once in 2018, but the fight was cancelled after Poirier pulled out due to an injury. The fight was supposed to be in the lightweight division.

But now, it looks like a fight between the two, if it takes place, would be in the welterweight division.

Poirier’s coach recently revealed that they were open to fighting Diaz, but only after getting their hands on the Lightweight title.
