Fan makes side by side comparison of Khamzat Chimaev and Colby Covington’s popularity
UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington can not comprehend the fervour around Khamzat Chimaev.
Covington weighed in this weekend as the UFC 286 backup fighter for the Leon Edwards vs. Kamaru Usman trilogy. Edwards went on to defeat Usman via majority decision, retaining the welterweight title.
Covington, who has not competed since his UFC 272 victory over Jorge Masvidal, will likely receive the next opportunity at the championship. The UFC has not scheduled a bout with Chimaev, despite the fact that rumours of a bout have been rife in recent months.
Despite the fight not occurring, Covington and Chimaev seem to have a disdain for each other.
During a press conference for UFC 286, Covington criticised Chimaev and explained why negotiations for a fight fell down:
“He talks all this shit, he talks about me in the media. They gave him a fight against ‘soy boy’ Nate Diaz and he couldn’t make weight by nine pounds. The guy sucks at fighting. He’s unprofessional. The guy couldn’t hold my fu*king jockstrap.”
A fan made a side by side comparison of the post-fight interviews of Covington and Chimaev. The Chechen fighter is head and shoulders above the American in terms of views, precisely more popular than Colby by 3.758million views.

Covington, who had been out of the spotlight for about a year, made a cameo at UFC 286 to issue a challenge to Leon Edwards. The possibility of a fight with Chimaev, who has been confirmed to have stepped up to middleweight, was also shot down by “Chaos” in a characteristically foul-mouthed diatribe.
When asked about Covington’s recent shenanigans, “Borz” swore on the Quran and accused “Chaos” of lying. He said:
“Colby is lying. He doesn’t want to fight. I swear with everything I have. I swear with the Gods. I accept the fight four times. All the Muslims understand, I swear to Quran. I get four times call, ‘you want to fight?’ I said yes. I have conversations with Sean Shelby that show it as well that we’re going to fight with this guy, but it never happened.”
