Dana White doesn’t believe that Khabib Nurmagomedov is done with the UFC and could make a return
Khabib Nurmagomedov shocked the UFC world by retiring after the end of his bout at UFC 254. The Russian had just put away Justin Gaethje in incredible fashion to retain his UFC Lightweight title.
However, the Russian had promised his mother that his fighting days were done. Khabib ended his career at an astonishing 29-0 but Dana White isn’t convinced the former champion is done.
There were talks of a super fight between Khabib and the legendary Georges St-Pierre for the Russian’s 30th fight.
This all happened in the lead up to the Gaethje clash but Khabib was hit hard by the death of his father. The Russian was extremely emotional after the win over Gaethje, and White believes some of those comments were made in haste.
The UFC president was speaking on the Zach Gelb show and believed emotions got the better of Khabib and the Russian is keen on going 30-0.
White would want to make such a statement given that Khabib is one of the biggest stars in the UFC. The Russian has a huge European and Middle Eastern following too and his retirement could take a chunk of that crowd away.
This isn’t the first time a top name has teased retirement and then come back. St-Pierre did it and he made a winning return before hanging up the gloves again.
Conor McGregor has also dabbled with retirement several times but is still alive and kicking in the UFC. The Notorious One retired in June this year but pulled out and will face Dustin Poirier later in 2021.
Many fans believed that Khabib was actually done with the UFC. The Russian brought up his mother in all this and he holds family values highly.
Khabib also spoke about being good to your parents after defeating Gaethje and has always preached this throughout his career.
It will be interesting to see what Khabib does later on as he has some projects in Abu Dhabi. However, the fans weren’t convinced by White’s statement and believed Khabib is done with MMA.
