UFC 256 had a couple of big fights cancelled but Tony Ferguson vs Charles Oliveira are set to battle it out
The final PPV of the year, UFC 256, had lost out a couple of major title fights. Kamaru Usman was to defend his UFC Welterweight title against Gilbert Burns and Amanda Nunes was to do the same with her Featherweight title against Megan Anderson at the event.
However, both clashes were postponed since the respective champions were dealing with injuries. No other major title fights were confirmed as replacements for the clash with Petr Yan defending his Bantamweight title against Aljamain Sterling still set for the card.
Sterling vs Yan was to be a co-main event but that should be pushed up after all the happenings. That still left the UFC with a problem as they needed another star to draw the people in.
While most of the big names were planning for 2021, a couple of them were willing to take up the cause.
UFC 256 takes place on 12 December and with three weeks remaining to the show, it would have been tough to find someone.
However, Tony Ferguson and Charles Oliveira seem to have accepted the clash with Brett Okamoto breaking the news.
Ferguson also posted his confirmation on social media, and this is huge given that the UFC still needed some huge names to pull in the viewers.
This would be Ferguson’s first fight since losing to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. Oliveira, for his part, is on a run of seven straight UFC wins and last defeated Kevin Lee earlier in 2020.
Ferguson is one of the big names in the promotion and he is to draw a lot of fans. However, Oliveira also should be in the running for a Lightweight title shot after his incredible run in the UFC.
This fight was made out of the blue, many fans were excited at the clash and posted their reactions:
