Stephen Thompson was another go at Jorge Masvidal in his next fight
Stephen Thompson rounded off 2020 with a brilliant win and already has a rival in mind for his next fight.
The 37-year-old put on a clinic against the younger Geoff Neal in the main event of UFC Vegas 17. Neal came into this fight on a seven-fight win streak but Thompson was excellent over the five rounds and won the clash via unanimous decision.
Thompson was also handed a bonus for one of the Performances of the Night and took home $50,000. However, he already is thinking of 2021 and has some grand plans. Thompson claimed that the title was something that he wanted to get his hands on and plans to face a big name next.
Thompson was carrying a few injuries after the fight as an inadvertent headbutt opened up a gash above his eye.
His right knee was also hurt during the final rounds of the clash but he still dominated Neal. Nevertheless, Wonderboy was ready for his next target and called out Jorge Masvidal.
Gamebred had last fought Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight title but lost that. He had taken up the fight on short-notice and did a decent job but the champion had enough in the tank to beat him.
Thompson and Masvidal had met at UFC 217 and it was Wonderboy who got that win. However, he lost the next two fights and had fallen out of the title race.
Wonderboy did have two battles against former champion Tyron Woodley, but the first one ended in a draw while the second one was a loss for the American.
It will be interesting to see if this fight against Masvidal is made next but many fans understood why this rematch made sense for Wonderboy, even though he had the win.
