Walt Harris lost to Alistair Overeem but earned the respect of many UFC stars
UFC Heavyweight championship contender Francis Ngannou shared a great message for division rival Walt Harris.
Harris made his return to the Octagon after a family tragedy and seemed set to win against the veteran Alistair Overeem.
However, he was defeated in the second round by Overeem. Harris was consoled by the Dutch star right after the fight.
Harris said in the post-fight interview that he would recharge and come back stronger in the ring, which got a lot of people talking.
The 36-year-old showed a lot of mental fortitude to return to the Octagon after his step-daughter’s death, and Ngannou had a great message for him on Twitter:
“Im very proud of @thebigticket205. I can’t really imagine what he been through but it must have been hell. Seeing him perform in the Octagon tonight just shows that we can overcome everything when we have a why. #RIPAniah #UFCFL”
Harris close to the win
Overeem is still one of the top performers in the UFC, and he was rocked in the first round.
Harris was a couple of punches away from picking up the win, but the referee allowed Overeem every chance of defending himself and getting back on his feet.
The Dutchman survived the early onslaught but still lost the first round, probably. Giving Overeem a second chance was always going to prove costly for Harris, and the veteran made his rival pay.
Overeem was able to mount Harris in the second round and land in some vicious blows. The referee had to end the fight as Harris couldn’t defend himself properly, and it was another W for Overeem to celebrate.
However, the Dutchman’s first reaction was to console Harris, and hopefully, we see more of the American in the coming months.
