Francis Ngannou became a UFC champion after defeating Stipe Miocic and wants to see Africa hold an event
UFC 260 saw the crowning of the latest Africa born champion in the promotion with Francis Ngannou defeating Stipe Miocic.
This was an exceptional performance by the Cameroon born star and put him on top of the mountain. Ngannou became the latest Africa born champion alongside Nigerian pair Kamaru Usman and Israel Adesanya.
The trio call themselves The Three Kings, and are huge hits in the African continent. While the UFC has held the majority of their shows in the USA, they have also had special events in Europe, South America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
However, an African event hasn鈥檛 taken place and that is something that Ngannou is batting for. The new champion had spoken about this previously but the calls have gotten louder now.
Ngannou was speaking with Ariel Helwani after his latest triumph and urged the UFC to get something done.
The new champion wanted the UFC to honour the three African champions and even tagged Dana White on social media:
Will the UFC have an event in Africa anytime soon?
Ngannou, Adesanya and Usman have been dominant in their respective division over the past couple of years or so.
It would make sense to hold an event with the three African champions starring, however, the current Covid-19 pandemic could lead to all sorts of problems.
The UFC will only get back to full crowns ahead of UFC 261 with Usman defending his title against Jorge Masvidal in a rematch from UFC 251.
White also ended up creating a special Fight Island in Abu Dhabi during the pandemic to ensure fights took place without any issues, yet, some stars still caught the virus.
Logistics aside, there is also a financial question involved in all this. Would the UFC get a lot of money with the three champions while conducting an event in the continent?
Where in Africa would they hold the event given how vast the continent is and the many countries that are part of it.
There are many questions related to this new event and it will be interesting to see if Ngannou and his king-mates can get the job done.
