The winner of Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler will get the lightweight title shot next
Dana White recently confirmed that the winner of Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler will get the lightweight title shot next. Islam Makhachev feels like he deserves the title shot before them. He has certainly been on a dominant run and recently won his ninth straight fight against Dan Hooker.
As one would expect. Makhachev was unhappy upon hearing the same and went on to reacted to the same on Twitter where he said:
“Both been there last fight, both got finished… keep talking @ufc”
It is worth noting that both Gaethje and Chandler got the title shot in their last fight and lost. This is why Makhachev feels like he should next be in line for a title shot. Even though Makhachev has been on a nine fight winning streak, he has only fought one top 10 lightweight in the UFC.
Makhachev’s last fight against Hooker was his first fight with someone from the top 10. UFC certainly feels that he needs to up his resume to get a title shot.
Why is Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler opening the UFC 268 main card?
Just days before the UFC 268 it was announced that the fight between Chandler and Gaethje will kick of the main card. Earlier their fight was scheduled to take place before the co-main event of Rose Namajunas and Zhang Weili.
However, it was later shifted to give Gaethje’s coach Trevor Wittman enough prep time for the co-main and main event of the UFC 268. Wittman is also the coach of Namajunas and Kamaru Usman who will be going into their respective fights as the champion.
