Khamzat Chimaev is one of the rising stars in the UFC and could be up against Gilbert Burns
Gilbert Burns has opened up on who his next fight could be against and brought up Khamzat Chimaev.
The Brazilian is a former UFC Welterweight contender. However, Burns lost his title shot against Kamaru Usman. The champion retained his crown with an incredible display at UFC 258.
This was also Burns’ first loss in seven outings. However, the Brazilian is back to winning ways after dispatching Stephen Thompson at UFC 264.
Burns is now keen on another fight and to make it back to the title scene. He claimed that Khamzat Chimaev is one of those who has accepted a fight against him.
Burns also opened up when the fight could be while speaking to Combate (h/t Bloody Elbow):
“We’ve been negotiating, we’re looking at an April slot,” Burns continued. “We’re just trying to establish an opponent. It could be Chimaev. He’s one of the few guys who has accepted and we’re still negotiating. We’ll see. It could be him next.”
Khamzat Chimaev is one of the rising stars in the promotion. Borz is undefeated in his MMA career and has finished all of his opponents in the UFC.
Chimaev is keen on facing several names and has called out the champion, Usman, too. However, a fight against Burns makes sense given the Brazilian is a former No.1 contender.
Fighters avoiding Gilbert Burns
The Brazilian, however, was also keen to point out that many were not keen to fight him. Burns’ stock might not be the same since his loss to Usman but no one has been able to defeat the Welterweight Champion.
Burns conceded that negotiations had not been easy since people were turning him down. However, he hoped that fighters would call him out after cards.
It will be interesting to see when Burns is back in action. He did a great job climbing up the ranks and a fight against Chimaev could end up becoming one of the best fights of 2022.
