Kamaru Usman was to defend his UFC Welterweight title against Gilbert Burns in 2020 but that fight didn’t happen

Several big UFC fights did not happen in 2020 with one of them being Kamaru Usman vs Gilbert Burns.

This was to be the third title defence for the UFC Welterweight Champion and was scheduled to headline the final PPV of the year.

However, Usman pulled out of the clash citing an injury and that he needed more time to recover. Nevertheless, we do have a new date for this huge clash in 2021 and it will take place on 13 February.

Usman is 17-1 in his MMA career and has beaten Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley in his last three bouts but Burns will be a huge test.

The Brazilian has looked excellent over the past couple of years and seems ready for the title. However, Usman posted a threat for 2021 and claimed he was ready.

Burns wasn’t taking the bait lightly and posted his own reaction to the same.

And new champion?

Burns also took some offence to the “they can try” comment form Usman in his caption. The Brazilian claimed that he wasn’t just going to try but would be crowned as the new champion when the pair meet.

Burns hasn’t lost an MMA fight since Dan Hooker got the better of him in July 2018. The Brazilian has beaten Demian Maia and Woodley in his last two fights and it will be interesting to see how he does against Usman.

Both are under the same management company and have trained in the past too. That could work in the favour of both stars as they would know each other’s game plans well.
