GSP implies that not even a Khabib Nurmagomedov fight is enough to get him back to UFC
Georges St-Pierre last fought in November 2017 and announced his official retirement from MMA in February 2019. The 39-year-old has since been tipped to make a return.
And let’s be honest, 39 is not too old to consider a return to the grandest stage of all. Nevertheless, the Canadian revealed this week that nothing at the moment motivates him enough to make a return.
He especially took a jab at current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. St-Pierre said that the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ is not worth putting three months of his life into.
Now that’s harsh, but it does make sense. Usman is dominant. No one can get close to beating him and some would even say that prime GSP would have trouble against him inside the octagon.
But it’s not about that. St-Pierre has an immense legacy, laden with title fights. He beat everyone he could during his time and made the welterweight division his own.
He even won the middleweight championship in his last ever career fight. So why would he consider a return?
Really GSP? Not even Khabib Nurmagomedov?
Apparently, no. From his words, it is implied that not even a fight against retired UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is enough to make GSP don his MMA shorts once again.
‘The Eagle’ retired last year at UFC 254, and like GSP, has been rumoured to return to UFC again. Dana White is trying all he can, but he seems inclined towards announcing his official retirement.
A fight between GSP and Khabib has for long been touted as a bout that would, 1. be big enough to get both of them back to UFC, and 2. settle the MMA GOAT debate.
That has turned out to be a fantasy fight so far. Khabib is primed to announce his retirement in a meeting with Dana White and that may put an end to these rumours once and for all.
