“He’s retired” – Dustin Poirier shuts down talk of facing Lightweight rival after cancelled fight

Dustin Poirier believes he won’t be fighting Nate Diaz since his rival has ‘retired’

The lack of UFC events has seen several stars take up Q+A sessions on social media.

Dustin Poirier did the same recently and many fans asked him about what his next fight could be.

Dustin Poirier is one of the top fighters in the UFC (UFC)

The American’s last outing was in UFC 242 where he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov. That was for the undisputed UFC Lightweight title and the 31-year-old hasn’t fought since.

He was asked by a fan about another fight, however. Poirier was to face Nate Diaz at UFC 230, but he backed out due to an injury.

Poirier answered that there were problems with the main event slot that led to the cancellation of the fight, and he then went on to solve and injury issue.

However, that fight seems completely off the cards now as Poirier suggested that Diaz had retired.

That is a little weird coming from The Diamond, given that Diaz categorically denied he retired from the sport.

Diaz’s last fight was for the BMF title against Jorge Masvidal, but he couldn’t get the better of Masvidal in that match.

No chance for San Diego too

Although Dana White has been adamant that UFC 249 will take place on 18 April, Poirier was unsure of another event.

UFC San Diego was to take place in May, and the UFC star was asked about it still going ahead. The UFC has suspended all operations till the UFC 249 fight due to the coronavirus pandemic, and The Diamond didn’t believe the May event would take place.

That could throw a spanner in the works for UFC 249 too. White had stated that the fight’s location is 99% set. However, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who headlines the main event, flew off to Russia to continue his training.

Tony Ferguson has been doing his bit to stay fit for the clash against Khabib, and it will be interesting to see if the match does take place.
