Everton supporter Molly McCann plans on boycotting the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar
Molly McCann has emerged as a role model for the LGBTQ+ community and has received recognition for her strength and courage as an openly gay woman. She continues to motivate the next generation by encouraging them to stand up for themselves. Besides that, she is a longtime fan of football and is often seen dawning the colors of her favorite club – English Premier League team, Everton FC.
The rising flyweight contender is just days away from her biggest challenge to date against Erin Blanchfield at UFC 281. McCann is currently riding on a two-fight win streak, that came via knockouts in spectacular fashion on her home soil at UFC London.
In an interview with a German journalist, former Qatari national team player and ambassador for the 2022 edition of FIFA World Cup, Khalid Salman stated that being gay is “haram,” or strongly discouraged in Arabic, and that he has a problem with children seeing people from LGBTQ community. Excerpts from the television interview aired on the ZDF news programme Heute Journal on Monday.
Commenting on her take on the World Cup, McCann stated:
“I’m not bothered about that. I’m not feeling the Qatar vibes and all the human rights that haven’t gone down there. I won’t even be watching it.”
Molly McCann is part of the new wave of English fighters who have taken the MMA world by storm. Alongside her teammate Paddy Pimblett, the duo were responsible for the roaring success of the two UFC London events this year.
With performances like these, popularity and fame were bound to come. Molly McCann spoke to the media about UFC superstar Conor McGregor’s advice on dealing with fame.
“I messaged him going, ‘How do you handle this? Because you can blow up and then you can blow up. I just couldn’t quite get my head around how some people are with you,. (McGregor) was just like, ‘When you’re in the gym, it’s just the gym. Don’t let no one else in. Keep everyone outside. Always remember it’s just fighting. You’re a cage warrior. That’s what we are. We’re Cage Warriors champions.’”
She further added:
“He said some mad things about, ‘Valentina is going to get a Mac spanking’ and all these things. It was so poetic, and it was so lovely. My partner, Ellis, printed it off and put it in a sign at MSG. It’s in my front room. So every day, if I’m struggling or I’m feeling good, I don’t get ahead of myself, get a big fat head, and walk around with ego. It’s to stay grounded and realize that I’m just here to win.”
