Islam Makhachev didn’t hold back when Conor McGregor threw his name into the lightweight title mix
Conor McGregor was brutally mocked by Islam Makhachev for asking about when he would be fighting the lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
Oliveira defeated Dustin Poirier in the recently concluded main event of UFC 269 to successfully retain his lightweight belt. This was his first successful title defense.
Despite getting off to a shaky start, ‘Do Bronx’ gathered steam in the second and third round, before ultimately submitting ‘The Diamond’ with a standing rear-naked choke.
In the wake of Oliveira’s victory, McGregor who is currently recovering from the ankle injury he suffered during his loss against Dustin Poirier in July, took to Twitter to enquire about the date he was fighting Oliveira.
McGregor wrote:
“So what date am I fighting Oliveira?”
Islam Makhachev, who might probably fight for the lightweight title soon, trolled McGregor saying that he would fight on the 30th of February.
“Your fight is on February 30.”
Islam Makhachev to fight Beneil Dariush next
Islam Makhachev will take on Beneil Dariush next. The pair will headline UFC Fight Night 203 on the 26th of February, next year. Makhachev, currently ranked number 4, is on a nine-fight win streak and is coming off a quick submission win over Dan Hooker at UFC 267.
Dariush, meanwhile, is ranked number 3. He is on a big win streak as well. The 32-year old is unbeaten in his last seven fights.
The fight could very well be a number one lightweight contender contest.
