“Focus on yourself” – Islam Makhachev warns Lightweight star after UFC 259 criticism

Islam Makhachev impressed with win over Drew Dober at UFC 259 but Michael Chandler didn’t jump on the bandwagon

UFC 259 saw the rise of Islam Makhachev as he defeated Drew Dober in impressive fashion.

Makhachev has been touted as a replacement for Khabib Nurmagomedov, the current UFC Lightweight Champion.

Khabib retired from the sport a few months back but he also has spoken about how great Makhachev is. The Eagle was also coaching Makhachev at UFC 259 and it seems some of his words worked wonders for the rising star.

Makhachev dominated Dober from the first second and won the fight via submission. However, one rising UFC star was unimpressed by all this.

Michael Chandler, a former Bellator Champion, joined the UFC as a free agent a few months back. His debut for the promotion went well as he knocked out Dan Hooker in a matter of seconds in the first round.

He called out Makhachev and brought up the Dagestani link but wasn’t all that impressed by the 29-year-old:

“On behalf of the ufc I’d like to apologize for this regularly schedule dagestani doxepin #ufc259”

However, Makhachev didn’t take this tweet lightly and responded with a bit of a threat:

“But you know my level, through your sparring partners.

Chandler has trained with many stars in the past and no doubt some of them would have come across Makhachev.

Islam Makhachev waiting to retire Khabib Nurmagomedov rival

Chandler vs Makhachev would be an interesting fight as they are two hungry stars wanting UFC gold.

However, Makhachev is already keen on fighting a rival that Khabib was unable to face.

Khabib and Tony Ferguson were never able to meet during their time in the UFC and Makhachev wants El Cucuy.

The Russian claimed he wanted to retire Ferguson and it will be interesting to see if this fight is set up.

Makhachev wants to fight someone in the top 10 and Ferguson is certainly there for the picking. El Cucuy might be one of the most dangerous Lightweights in the world. However, he is on a losing streak.

Ferguson was easily defeated by Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira in his last fights.
