Khabib Nurmagomedov made his coaching debut at UFC 259 and didn’t let Javier Mendez get too many words in
Javier Mendez, who is the coach of both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, shared his views on Khabib’s coaching debut at the PPV last weekend as he spoke on his podcast on YouTube.
The Russian icon was in Makhachev’s corner as he took on Drew Dober at UFC 259 in a lightweight bout last weekend.
Mendez said that he had to take Islam to the side and get a few words in because Khabib was incessantly giving instructions from the corner.
He said ‘The Eagle’ does not want to be a coach per se but he still praised his role as a corner man.
“Khabib wouldn’t stop talking… Khabib is actually a hell of a coach in the corner. He’s not a coach per se, because that’s not what he wants to be, but he is a great corner, he is really good corner, man. He wouldn’t let get any words in and I just tried to sneak in whatever I could.”

Mendez mentioned that Islam stuck to Father’s plan and did everything as he was instructed to, except kick low. But that didn’t matter in the end.
Makhachev won via submission in round 3 and took a huge step towards making a name for himself at 155.
It is unclear who he would fight next. He is 19-1-0 in his professional MMA career and is really turning up the gears now.
Makhachev bravely called out Tony Ferguson and said that the ‘old’ Ferguson needed retiring, and he would help him do that.
‘El Cucuy’ against Makhachev with Khabib in the corner is one scenario all MMA fans would be licking their lips over.
