Chris Weidman suffered a nasty leg break at UFC 261 that sent shockwaves across the MMA community.
Chris Weidman stepped inside the octagon at UFC 261, with many a dream of breaking into the top ranks of the middleweight division. The number 11 ranked middleweight contender was coming off a confidence-boosting win over Omari Akhmedov in August 2020.
However, fate had other plans for the All American. Just 17 seconds into the first round of the fight, Weidman suffered a horrifying leg injury, which had his leg hanging loose. An injury strikingly similar to Anderson Silva’s injury against Weidman himself at UFC 168.
The fight was immediately waved off, and Hall won the fight without even landing a single strike on Weidman. He thereby became the first fighter in UFC history to win a fight without landing even a single strike.
Weidman was stretchered off and rushed to the hospital. He underwent surgery the next day, and the former middleweight champ has been recovering.
UFC commentator Jon Anik who was on air during the incident, recently spoke to Mike Heck of MMA fighting, and explained how emotionally draining that moment was. He revealed that he was emotionally all over the place, and had even missed a promo queue.
He then explained how a pall of gloom had momentarily taken over their commentary booth and in fact the entire stadium.
Weidman’s injury sent a shudder down the spines of those in attendance, as well as down the people watching around the world. The previous bout in the main card, featuring light-heavyweights Jimmy Crute and Anthony Smith had ended due to a leg injury to Crute, as well.
At that point, it looked like it was going to be a long night. But then came the title fights. Each and every fight was an absolute banger.
Valentina Shevchenko TKOed Jessica Andrade to another successful title defense.
Rose Namajunas stunned strawweight champion Zhang Weili in the very first round, with a highlight reel leg kick to the head, as she became the first woman in UFC history to clinch the same title in two separate occasions.
Then came the main event, where Kamaru Usman knocked out Jorge Masvidal, handing him his first knockout loss in his UFC career.
UFC 261 will go down in history as one of the most entertaining UFC events ever.
