It has been over a year since Jon Jones moved to the heavyweight division
In August 2020, Jon Jones moved to the heavyweight division. The then-reigning LHW champion expressed his desire to seek bigger and stronger challenges, after having conquered the 205lb division to the fullest.
However, due to a number of issues, primarily fighter pay dispute with UFC President Dana White, his HW debut is still pending.
A couple of months ago, a vexed Jones also announced that he wouldn’t be fighting until 2022.
But, Jones has “bigger” plans. ‘Bones’ aims to hit 275lbs on the scale and become the biggest and baddest heavyweight ever, at least that is what his newly-signed advisor, Richard Schaefer (former CEO of Golden Boy Promotions) claims.
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani during the MMA Hour, Schaefer divulged that he had learned the same after a chat with Jones.
He was quoted as saying:
“By the way, I talked to him yesterday. He’s 260 pounds now, 260 muscle, strong, explosive. His goal is to go to 275 and basically be the biggest and baddest heavyweight the UFC has ever seen.”
A super clash between Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou loomed large, after the latter demolished Stipe Miocic at UFC 260 to get the heavyweight belt.
But, it soon fizzled out as Jones and Dana White were not able to come to a consensus and put an end to their cold war.
Now, Ngannou has a title bout coming up against the newly-crowned interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane – another technically gifted fighter.
But the big question remains – will Jones get the title shot right away?
