Jon Jones might have to wait for a while before his next fight gets underway
Jones is yet to make his heavyweight debut after renouncing his light-heavyweight title in August 2020. He announced his move to the heavyweight division in the immediate aftermath.
9 months on, he still hasn’t made his HW debut, although he has been packing on the muscles and put on at least 50lbs of weight. Plus, he has been training like never before.
Jones was expected to face newly-crowned UFC Heavyweight Francis Ngannou, but the offer went to Derrick Lewis’ hand, after a payment dispute between Jones and UFC President Dana White.
White, then had a suggestion – he said in an interview that, Jones might probably face Stipe Miocic on his heavyweight debut. Jones disapproved of it, saying he wouldn’t fight someone like Miocic who is coming off a terrible loss.
And hence, White confirmed that Miocic might get another shot at the title, against the winner of Ngannou vs Lewis.
More recently, Jones answered a few fan questions on Twitter. He said that he was unsure of when he would be fighting next, while claiming that it was good to get “some downtime”.
Jones tweeted:
“I’m really not sure when I’ll be fighting next, but some downtime after a decade of wins is a nice little change up right now.”
Not budging to Dana White’s offers has led to Jones losing a couple of fights already. A fan warned Jones sarcastically that he would lose his relevance if he kept turning down fights.
Jones replied that his name would be etched in the world of combat sports forever, while also declaring that his first fight in the HW division will be a massive one.
Jones wrote:
“Impossible, my name will ring bells in the combat sports world until the day I die and after. My first fight back is going to be huge no matter when it is.”
