Jon Jones recently acknowledged a fan on Twitter who pointed out that fellow fighters deprecate his position as the ‘GOAT’ because of his past
Jon Jones is beyond the shadow of a doubt one of the greatest fighters of all time, and in all certainty will face Stipe Miocic for his heavyweight debut. He holds the record for being the youngest UFC champion in history, and his path to systematic damage of his opponents is a sight to behold.
Although Jones’ greatness inside the octagon cannot be denied, his antics outside the ring, and trouble with the law has tainted his legacy according to many. The UFC inducted Jon Jones into the 2021 Hall of Fame for his fabled war at UFC 165 against Alexandar Gustafsson. But every silver lining in his career has been overshadowed by his misconduct outside the octagon, which has tainted his legacy.
On September 24, 2021, early morning after the prestigious induction, police had been called to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on account of a domestic violence incident involving Jones and his wife. It was publicized that Jones pulled his partner’s hair and left her with a bloody lip. She later claimed it was due to her chapped lips. Jones was charged with one count of domestic battery, a misdemeanour, and one count of tampering with a police vehicle, a felony.
Besides that he has been punished in the past for doping violation, hit and run case, just to name a few. MMA fighters are divided on Jones’ GOAT status owing to these issues in the past.
A fan recently posed this question to Jones on Twitter – ‘‘Do u think people know your the goat but they don’t want you to be the goat because of the past?”
Jones replied in his own, semi-cryptic manner by saying that it’s hard for people to comprehend your greatness if they think they are better than you. He wrote, ‘It’s hard to see someone that you think you’re better than do such great things. Sit on that’
UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya made his fifth successful title defense today at UFC 276. He outclassed and outpointed Jared Cannonier in a slightly underwhelming contest. Although the fight did not live up to everyone’s expectations, it was Izzy’s groundbreaking entrance that was the talk of the town.
Ahead of UFC 276, Izzy had said that he’s channelling his dark side, particularly for this fight. Although he kept the curtains draped on his entrance, he surprised everyone when he made one of the best octagon walkouts ever. Fans salivated and expressed their appreciation for Adesanya’s star power and showmanship.
Jones reacted to Izzy’s performance and chances against Alex Pereira by saying, ‘Bro I can’t stop thinking about this shit. How are you going to threaten a guy like Alex with glossy fingernails and a frozen reference. I’m over here scratching my head. ’
