Jorge Masvidal last fought Kamaru Usman but is planning a big UFC return in 2021
Jorge Masvidal might have failed in his attempts to win the UFC Welterweight title last year but he is planning a huge return in 2021.
Gamebred fought Kamaru Usman for the gold at UFC 251 but took up the fight on less than a week’s notice. He replaced Gilbert Burns, who contracted Covid-19, but the UFC star hinted that some big plans are set up.
Masvidal last fought in July 2020 but has been busy with other projects. He sort of campaigned for Donald Trump during the US Presidential elections and has also taken up some commentary during his spare time.
Masvidal was on the microphone for the Saul Alvarez vs Avni Yildririm. It was Alvarez that picked up another win and Masvidal even interviewed the boxing great.
However, he also spoke about plans for his next fight and shared some big details (h/t Metro):
“Right now, I’m focused on me fighting for the belt. In September, we have just got word.”
Masvidal and Usman seemed set to meet after UFC 258. Usman defeated Burns with ease and kept hold of his belt. He then called out Masvidal but then backtracked on the comments.
It is to be seen if Masvidal vs Usman is confirmed but there aren’t any big names for the champion to face in that division at the moment.
Colby Covington would also be a rematch, but Usman won that fight too.
Jorge Masvidal to take up boxing?
Gamebred has done a lot of MMA fighting over the years, but he didn’t turn down the possibility of getting the boxing gloves on.
Masvidal spoke about the pay system in the UFC more than a year ago, and boxing’s pay cheques seem to entice Gamebred:
“I love boxing and boxing gives the big pay cheques.
“What I mean is they pay out for the PPVs we bring in than more than in my current sport so would I love to be in boxing? No brainer, yes.
“When the time comes we will cross that bridge and get the right opponents.”
Gamebred also congratulated Canelo but didn’t turn down a possible future fight. However, he had a ton of respect for the boxing great and did not want to rain on his parade:
“We can definitely cross promote. But I’m here as a fan. I wasn’t here to call out Canelo or anything like that. I’m just a fan of the man, I love what he does, I love boxing, it’s simple.”
Gamebred in a boxing ring could be entertaining too. However, he won’t be able to use his knees and legs to cause damage, something that Ben Askren would know.
