Jorge Masvidal ate dust against Kamaru Usman in their title bout at UFC 261
Kamaru Usman retained his 170-pound UFC title against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261 in Florida last weekend. And he did it in style.
A massive punch knocked ‘Gamebred’ off his feet after just 62 seconds in the 2nd round, and the Nigerian followed it up with some brutal ground shots.
This was the first time that Masvidal had been finished since 2008, and it was the first time for him in UFC history. No one saw this coming and even Khabib Nurmagomedov took notice of the win.
Usman is one of the most complete fighters at welterweight but even he would have surprised himself after that; It showed the world that the champ has some serious knockout fighter.
But what divided opinions after the fight was his decision to pile on Masvidal with ground shots even though he was clearly finished at that point.
However, Masvidal is himself cool with it as he revealed his thoughts on ESPN MMA earlier this week. In fact, he even went on to appreciate that call from Usman.
“Obviously, it’s down on me. But I love it. This is why I love the sport. Taking me out, making me just stop… I’m watching and I think ‘this is the guy that does it to everybody and has done it in a very brutal way now, it got done to him.’ You gotta love this sport because I’m telling you in this sport there is no God. It’s just man vs man, and man is not perfect. Anything can happen… so that’s why everybody around the world loves this game. It’s beautiful, poetic, mathematic or scientific. It’s insane.”
Like many fans around the world, Masvidal himself did not see this coming. The challenger stated that he never thought that out of all people, Usman would finish him like this.
“I never would have thought he would do that to me. Of all the animals I’ve fought in the stand-up world, guys that get their money off stand-up, it hasn’t happened to me. And now it has. It’s what this game is; MMA, I love it.”
Masvidal himself once said that those ground shots are super necessary and he isn’t one to go back on his words so his response is not that surprising.
As for Usman, his next fight seems to be against Colby Covington.
