Jorge Masvidal was not particularly impressed with Leon Edwards’ performance at UFC 263
Leon Edwards eased (or did he?) to a unanimous decision win over Nate Diaz at UFC 263. The pair fought it out in a first-ever 5-round non-title fight in UFC history.
The Brit dominated Diaz for 24 minutes of the 25-minute fight. However, in the 25th minute, Diaz erupted like Mt. Kilauea and almost knocked out ‘Rocky’. Had there been a minute or two, Diaz would have finished Edwards.
Despite the late scare, Edwards ended up scoring 49-46 on all three judges’ scorecard, and brought up his ninth consecutive victory.
Fellow UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal wasn’t particularly impressed with Edwards’ performance. Speaking in an interview with THEMACLIFE, Masvidal subtly took a dig at Edwards for playing it safe.
“It was a good fight, good performance, I thought. Leon does what he does and he keeps asking for more money and more things, but he’s not a finisher. He’s not a fighter.”
Despite having not lost a single fight since December 2015, Edwards has been constantly overlooked by the promotion. He never even came close to challenging for the title, although he had an impressive win streak.
Masvidal pointed out to Edwards’ lack of risk taking abilities as the reason behind him being overlooked and not in the position where he wants to be.
He was quoted as saying:
“He was winning happily and he wasn’t willing to put himself at risk to go out there and get those finishes. That’s why I don’t think he’s in the position that he wants to be in, because he’s not going out and fighting every second of every minute.”
As for Masvidal, he is gearing up for the first event of his Gamebred Fighting Championship, which kicks off on the 18th of June.
