Jorge Masvidal responds to Kamaru Usman on talks of a potential rematch in the future
It was in July 2020 when Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman went head-to-head for the UFC welterweight championship.
That UFC 251 title fight was won by The Nigerian Nightmare via unanimous decision. Usman, who is undefeated in his UFC career, recently spoke about running it back with Gamebred.
Usman said that he would want a rematch with Masvidal so he could finish him off. Masvidal had stepped up for the title bout on a week’s notice last year.
Gilbert Burns was to fight Usman. However, the Brazilian tested positive for Covid-19 and Gamebred was more than ready to accept the short notice fight.
While Masvidal did dominate the first round then, Usman won the other 4 rounds with his wrestling and clinch. Nevertheless, Masvidal replied to the Nigerian-American’s interview.
He wrote that he would beat Usman and take his belt if he had at least 3 week’s time, instead of the 1 week’s notice he got the last time around.
He also highlighted the fact the champion left the octagon that day with a broken nose.
Masvidal has no fights booked as of now. But, rumours say that he could face Colby Covington in the near future. That, however, is unconfirmed.
On the other hand, Usman will be defending his welterweight belt yet again, this time against Gilbert Burns at UFC 258.
Nevertheless, he has not put a rematch with Masvidal out of the question. He says that if Gamebred works his way up the ladder for the fight, he would cherish it. (h/t BJPenn.com)
“So, there’s a potential of that fight happening again if he works himself there, but I want to do it again because I want to put an exclamation on it. I want to finish him. I want to impress myself.”
It would be a great fight if it does happen in the future. However, it might not be anytime soon. Masvidal beating Covington (if that fight does take place) and Usman beating Burns, could, however, make a rematch possible.
