Kimbo Slice is a legend in the MMA circuits and Jorge Masvidal used to train with him
Jorge Masvidal was speaking on the Halfcast Podcast with Mark Hunt as both UFC stars shared some fun stories.
Masvidal, the BMF champion, has had a tough journey into the UFC. He spent several years fighting underground and in backyards, something MMA legend Kimbo Slice made famous.
Slice passed away a few years ago and Masvidal recounted how he got into the MMA business thanks to the legend.
However, there was a funny story about him getting his first fight in the backyard circuit:
“I am at McDonald’s ordering food and Kimbo calls, ‘Yo, what you doing?’.
“I was like, ‘Nah, getting some food real quick’”.
Slice then asked him if he wanted to “scrap” today and Masvidal was more than ready for that.
Slice and Masvidal train hard
Masvidal also added that he used to train at the same gym as Slice, and that was one reason why he got close to the legend:
“Me and Kimbo, we worked out in the same gym in Miami and got at ATT since Kimbo was with ATT too.
“I was going there three-four weeks and he asked me if I wanted to fight in his backyard.
“I was like ‘Hell Yeah, I would love to do it’. Back then, especially in Miami, it was super illegal. So they didn’t want to bring in big crowds as the police would shut it down.
“The day of the fight, they would give you the address.”
The BMF champion also spoke about him not getting a call for months before it came out of the blue and then things went quiet again:
“For three months, I didn’t speak to Kimbo and all of a sudden I get a call, ‘Hey you ready? You in shape?’ and I was like ‘**** yeah, been waiting for your call.’”
Masvidal was supposed to get a call in three weeks but nothing came, and that freaked the American out.
The 35-year-old added that he has another three years at the top level and plans to spend time skiing after retiring from the sport.
