Jorge Masvidal opened up on his KO loss to Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC 261.
Masvidal suffered the knockout loss in his UFC career as a huge straight right hand from Usman almost took his soul out.
Barring a takedown from Usman in the first round, Masvidal began the fight well. And, despite being a massive underdog, people didn’t write Gamebred off, since he was coming off a full training camp.
But The Nigerian Nightmare showed the world how much he has improved since the pair’s last meeting at UFC 251. It was as if his striking was as good as his wrestling which in turn is second to none.
A dejected Masvidal was left reeling after disappointing his home crowd, but also acknowledged Usman at the post-fight interview, saying he showed something which he didn’t show at UFC 251 – which is without a question, Usman’s underrated striking.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani of ESPN MMA in his MMA show, Masvidal revealed what went wrong at UFC 261. Gamebred claimed that he had completely misread Usman’s intentions, before going on to say that he has become a fan of his own KO moment.
Masvidal said:
“I thought he was going in for a shot and when I realized it wasn’t a shot, it was too late, I was throwing my check left hook, but it was already too late. I read the information wrong. So he sold it to me beautifully and that’s why he got those results. Gosh. Of that moment right there, I am a fan. Because I love the sport so much. It’s just beautiful technique.”
Jorge Masvidal’s last KO loss came in 2008
Masvidal’s brutal KO loss to Kamaru Usman was the first knockout loss of his UFC career, but not his first ever knockout loss.
His first-ever knockout loss came at the hands of Rodrigo Damm (former UFC lightweight, now retired), at World Victory Road Presents: Sengoku 3 way back in 2008.
Although the referee was heavily criticized for the early stoppage, it gave Masvidal his first ever KO loss.
After a huge right hand from Damm, Masvidal hits the canvas, only for the referee to wave off the fight right away, without even realizing that Masvidal clearly wasn’t hurt.
