Julianna Pena defeated Amanda Nunes at UFC 269 in what is considered to be a gargantuan upset
Julianna Pena stunned the world when she beat Amanda Nunes to become the women’s bantamweight champion at UFC 269. The 32-year old handed Nunes her first defeat in more than 7 years with a second-round submission win by means of a rear-naked choke.
Pena started off the first round on a confident note. Despite not being able to outclass ‘The Lioness,’ she did set the tone for what was to come.
In the second round, she battled fire with fire, throwing jab after jab in a display of brilliant standup fighting. Her bravado turned out to be fruitful after she took a gassed out Nunes down and submitted her.
Is Julianna Pena’s win the biggest ever upset in UFC history?
When Julianna Pena claimed that she would beat Amanda Nunes earlier this year, a vast majority of the MMA community mocked her.
Her win against Amanda Nunes at UFC 269 might be the biggest upset ever in the history of the promotion or at least it is up there with Matt Serra beating Georges St-Pierre.
Pena was a +600 underdog, and Nunes a -1100 favourite in a majority of the sportsbooks. Pena was treated by the fans just like every other opponent of Nunes, prior to the fight. However, she did exactly what she said she would do and got the job done.
This might very well be one of the greatest upsets in UFC history, if not, the greatest.
