Justin Gaethje was just as shocked as the rest of the UFC world after Dustin Poirier knocked out Conor McGregor
UFC 257 might have taken place a few days back but everyone is still in shock as to how Dustin Poirier knocked out Conor McGregor.
Many had predicted that The Diamond would lose to McGregor ahead of the clash. However, this was a different Poirier as he avenged his loss to the Irishman at UFC 178.
Poirier got the better of McGregor early on with some leg kicks and then used a punch to bring him down. That got a lot of people talking and another one was Justin Gaethje, one of the challengers for the Lightweight title.
Kamaru Usman, the UFC Welterweight Champion, was speaking to the Schmo and Helen Yee. He was watching the fight alongside Gaethje and was asked how the Highlight reacted to the ending:
“Justin actually walked up the stairs, I think I overheard him [say] ‘F***’”.
Justin Gaethje to quit UFC if Conor McGregor gets a title shot
Gaethje’s last fight was for the Lightweight title. However, the Highlight was easily defeated by Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The champion then retired after the win and no one knows what is to be done for the next title shot.
Gaethje has claimed that he should get a title shot but only after getting a win. McGregor has spoken about a trilogy with Poirier and his next fight being for the title.
However, Gaethje shot back and blasted McGregor and the UFC. He was speaking with ESPN and claimed he would quit the promotion if McGregor got a rematch for the gold:
“He’s not fighting for a title. I will think about never fighting in the UFC again if he fights for a title. That would be preposterous.
“He’s sitting at No. 6, he’s won one fight in his entire life in the lightweight division. He picks and chooses who he fights. I would love to fight him but I don’t think it should be next. But he ain’t gonna fight me.”
Gaethje also hit out at McGregor’s character and claimed the Irishman would have been an “a******” had he beat Poirier.
The Lightweight division saw another star rise in Michael Chandler. Iron Mike defeated Dan Hooker on his UFC debut and he could be in the running for a title shot too.
Then we have Charles Oliveira. The Brazilian dismantled Tony Ferguson in his last fight and he too could get a shot at the gold.
Poirier, however, has placed himself the best in all this. The win over McGregor was huge for his career and he has been calling himself the uncrowned champ ever since.
