Khabib Nurmagomedov recently commented on the current political situation in Afghanistan that didn’t sit well with the fans
The Taliban have taken over Afghanistan, overthrowing the existing government. Amidst turmoil and chaos, a plethora of people have already fled the country, fearing for their lives.
Their president Ashraf Ghani himself fled to Tajikistan on the 15th of August. The women have been ordered to stay inside their homes by the Taliban, meaning they must not work at any cost.
Although the country has become quiet over the last few days, the common people are struggling to make their ends meet.
In a recent media interaction with RT Sport, a couple of days ago, retired UFC lightweight fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov commented on the political situation in Afghanistan that did not sit well with the fans.
‘The Eagle’ claimed that he wasn’t interested to discuss something “that happens thousands of kilometres away.”
Here is what he said:
“We have never have such a serious deal neither in Russian football, not in hockey. Today we have such a deal, and I wouldn’t like to discuss this political moment that happens thousands of kilometres away.”
Khabib Nurmagomedov clarifies his comments on Afghanistan
On realizing that his comments rubbed his Afghan fans in the wrong way, Khabib Nurmagomedov clarified his comments in yet another media interaction with RT Sport, this time while promoting Gorilla Energy Drink.
Khabib explained that he didn’t want to comment on politics, and had nothing against the country of Afghanistan. He also requested apology if “his fans were offended.”
He was quoted as saying:
“My reaction was (like that) because I didn’t want to comment on politics. The reactions were quite intense from my Afghan fans. I think I was misunderstood. I meant that I didn’t want to comment on the political situation. I hope they will forgive me if I’ve offended them.”
Khabib, then went on to share his empathy towards the people of Afghanistan and the sufferings they have undergone over 100s of years.
Khabib continued:
“I’m not ashamed to apologise to them because anyone can make a mistake. It all sounded different in my head; I just didn’t want to comment on politics. Their people have suffered a lot in their lives. You’ll know if you study their history of the past 120 years. I feel the pain of those people. I worry and I want to wish them all the best.”
‘The Eagle’ has very often explained that “politics was never his thing.”
