Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Georges St-Pierre is a dream fight for many but this might not happen anytime soon
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Georges St-Pierre is one fight that just wont go away even though it isn’t scheduled.
Dana White had had come out and suggested that this was never going to happen recently but an interview with RT sport seems to have opened the door on which weight class it could take place.
Khabib was asked during the interview if the fight against GSP would take place.
However, GSP had spoken about it not being at Lightweight since he wouldn’t cut so much weight since he was 40. Khabib was pushed if the fight would take place at 170 pounds but The Eagle wasn’t so keen:
“I won’t fight at 170. That’s for sure. It’s not my natural weight.
“When I am in shape, my weight is around 180. To cut down to 170 and weight in around 176 on Fight Night against the best fight of the weight class in the history of the sport?
“It reminds me of my childhood, when you are fighting a karate guy taking him down and he is like ‘hey, let’s stand up and fight like men!’
“’But we started the fight on the feet!’, you know what I am talking about?”
Khabib Nurmagomedov not turning down a return at Lightweight
However, Khabib didn’t close the door on returning to the UFC or fighting. He has had several meetings with Dana White and the UFC president still believes The Eagle will be back for a 30th fight.
“I am a Lightweight champion and if there’s an interesting option for me, I’d like to materialize at Lightweight.
“I am not fighting St-Pierre at 170, no.”
This is an interesting comment from Khabib and throws the door open to a return. He retired from the UFC with an incredible 29-0 record but hasn’t been stripped of the title.
GSP seems to be the fight that he also wants and the Canadian has been training relentlessly over the past few months.
The fight might not happen at 170 but a catchweight clash would still be an incredible fight for all. GSP vs Khabib would be a blockbuster but there still are a few hurdles before this can be set up.
