Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his official retirement from the sport of MMA earlier this year
Arguably the greatest lightweight mixed martial artist, the world has ever seen – Khabib left the sport undefeated(29-0) when he announced his retirement after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2020.
With rumors rife that he would make a comeback, the Eagle put an end to all the speculations after it was confirmed and made official by Dana White on the 18th of March that he had officially retired.
In a recent video he shared on Instagram, a 24-year old Khabib can be seen predicting his own retirement in an interview with a journalist. Talk about visionary!
“My plan is… I am 24. And if I win the belt and I stay undefeated, most likely I’ll leave the sport because it has no end. If I win the title and stay undefeated I’ll retire.”
And he did so as ‘laid-out’, eight years later after beating Justin Gaethje. Quoting the famous words of LeSean McCoy, Khabib retired as an Eagle.
Khabib’s love for the sport never dies. You can’t keep the Russian away from the Octagon side. He has now taken up coaching, and is already 4-0 up in his coaching career.
Khabib has coached his fellow Dagestani brothers, notably Usman Nurmagomedov, Umar Nurmagomedov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov to victories across various promotions. And, not to forget Islam Makhachev, as well.
The Dagestani has a busy July coming up, as Makhachev, Usman and Abubakar have fights scheduled in July.
Makhachev will be taking on Thiago Moises in a bid to push even higher in the lightweight rankings. Abubakar takes on Daniel Rodriguez on the 17th of July at UFC Fight Night 191, whereas Usman is set to compete in Bellator 262.
