Khabib Nurmagomedov is not a big fan of the ring girls in mixed martial arts
The Ring girls have been in existence since the 1960s. The first known appearance of ring girls was in the 1965 edition of the Ring Magazine.
While some have brushed it off as a part of the show, a few have disputed their presence, calling them unnecessary -except for providing a sexual attraction for males.
However, this has been a tradition for ages and ages, and they will remain. There have also been allegations of ring girls in the UFC being paid more than the UFC’s female fighters.
In a recent media interaction with RT SPORT, while promoting Gorilla Energy Drink, UFC lightweight GOAT Khabib Nurmagomedov branded ring girls as the most useless people in MMA.
Khabib said that it was his own opinion and didn’t mean to offend anyone. He also added that he would never implement the same in his own promotion – Eagle Fighting Championship.
Khabib was quoted as saying:
“Look, I don’t want to offend anyone, ring girls are the most useless people in martial arts. What is their purpose? I have a question. You can show that it is the second round on the screen. I realize that is a history. History knows many mistakes. We read history to avoid mistakes of the past in the future. If we look in the history, it says they are useless. That is my personal opinion…” [via BJ Penn]
‘The Eagle’ has very often directly or indirectly stated his disliking for ring girls in MMA. There was a time when Russian ring girl Anya Galochkina covered herself up before going in front of Khabib, just after he had defended his title against Conor McGregor in October 2018.
There have been a couple of other similar instances as well.
Khabib Nurmagomedov points out how no one looks at the ‘number plate’ the ring girls display
Khabib then justified his comments by claiming that no one would be looking at the number plate when a ring girl displays the same.
He was quoted as saying:
“For example, I sit with my father. Every person has his own preferences, the culture, and values. I come to fight night, sit with my father. These people are passing by and showing that it is the second round. But no one looks at the plate.” [via BJ Penn]
Khabib continued:
“I feel uncomfortable with my father. I am not against it. If you want you can do it, but don’t impose it to me, do it aside. There are the designated places for it. I think we must not mix all of it. This is my private opinion.” [via BJ Penn]
