Khabib Nurmagomedov and his coach are now training with the Russian’s cousins
UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently retired but that doesn’t mean that he is not involved in the sport.
The Russian has assumed the position of a coach of his team. And earlier this week, he revealed that he and Javier Mendez have taken two of his cousins under their wing.
‘The Eagle’ posted a photo on his Instagram account with his two brothers and Mendez standing together.
Nurmagomedov also has Islam Makhachev in his team. He was impressive at UFC 259 earlier this week when his wrestling masterclass against Drew Dober was enough to hand him the win.
And now, his two cousins might just be next in line. At least that is what Khabib’s caption (originally in Russian) under the photo says.
“Everything is going according to plan, next in line @abubakar_nurmagomedov and @usman_nurmagomedov And @akajav and I are next to them and chase them. Thank you @bukaboxing what’s next.”
Who are the cousins of Khabib Nurmagomedov?
The two fighters training with Khabib and Mendez are the 32-year-old’s cousins, Abubakar Nurmagomedov (15-3-1) and Usman Nurmagomedov (11-0-0).
Abubakar is already competing in the UFC welterweight division where the 31-year-old lost his debut fight against David Zawada at UFC Fight Night 163.
Usman is mostly fighting regionally and has most notably fought in UAE Warriors. It was recently announced that he would debut against Mike Hamell at Bellator 255.
Khabib seems content with his newfound role as a coach. Nevertheless, a return to UFC always remains a possibility.
Dana White revealed that he was doing everything possible to get the Russian back to the promotion, but it may prove to be a very difficult task.
