Khabib Nurmagomedov shared an emotional poem after a former village head of Dagestan was killed
Abakar Kaplanov, a former head of Novokuli, a village in Dagestan, was shot to death earlier last weekend. The killing is said to have arisen out of a land dispute.
The initial incident saw 100s of people take to the streets in the small village of Dagestan. 36 shots were fired at Kaplanov in what is reported as a cold-blooded murder.
Following the events, former UFC lightweight fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov addressed his grief over the situation.
The Russian UFC star posted a hair-raising excerpt from 20th century Russian Poet Aleksandr Tvardovsky’s war poem ‘Vassili Tyorkin’.
Nurmagomedov initially posted the poem in its original language on his Instagram post. It is translated into English here by RT.
“Everything related to murder, garbage and other similar events that occur in our republic almost every day. Raise your children, teach them, show them the right example so that they grow up healthy, smart and worthy. Maybe they will change the situation in which we live.”
Dagestan has not been alien to conflict in recent years. The UFC lightweight champion is one of the most popular sportspeople in the world.
His name carries even more weight in Eastern Europe, especially Russia. After all, Nurmagomedov is a native of Dagestan.
And his message could go a long way in making the difference. Words on social media, more often than not, cannot make a big difference when the conflict is carried out on streets.
However, if the message for peace comes from someone such as Nurmagomedov, people will listen. The young generation of the Republic would undoubtedly hold the MMA icon as a role model when growing up.
And thus, this call for peace and reason from him gains even more significance in this situation.
