UFC welterweight title contender Khamzat Chimaev is all fired up with the prospect of facing Colby Covington next

Leading up to UFC 273 UFC president Dana White had suggested that the welterweight bout between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns will determine the next title contender at 170 lbs. However during UFC London, White had pledged that Leon Edwards is the next in line for the title, and the UFC head honcho has other plans for Chimaev should he win at UFC 273.

Leading up to UFC 273, Dana White spoke to TMZ Sports, and suggested a potential match for Chimaev post-UFC 273. He said, “In a perfect world, you know, I have a fight coming up on ABC. If Khamzat Chimaev should win, I would love to do a fight with him and Colby.” And to his delight Chimaev did pass the test, and this sets the stage for a fight between them.

Khamzat Chimaev was worked up with the contemplation of the idea and welcomed it with open arms. He even posted a fan poster with the caption, ‘Let’s goooo 💥💥💥💥👊🏼’

The poster also (from Chimaev’s POV) takes an aim at Colby Covington, who was in the news last month for his ill-famed incident with rival Jorge Masvidal, who attacked him at a restaurant in Miami. Many from the MMA community had mocked Colby for calling the cops and pressing charged for the incident. Also if we were to go by Covington’s history with trash-talking, it is possible that the ‘Chaos’ will sell the narrative of USA vs Russia for this particular fight. The poster shows Colby being accompanied by an army of cops, while Chimaev is backed by a pack of wolves.

There’s a reason why Khamzat Chimaev’s work ethic is so famed and fabled. The Chechen has a reputation for being the hardest worker in the room, and his diligence and assiduity are second to none.

Usually fighters take some time off, especially after a war like the one at UFC 273, to spend some time with their families away from fighting or reflect on the fight itself. But Chimaev does not like to fritter away time and immediately got back to the gym on Tuesday.

At UFC 273, Chimaev got off to a good start, utilizing his wrestling skills and size advantage, and dropped Burns towards the end of the round. The Chechen detailed in the post-fight interview that he got too comfortable and obsessed to knock out Burns, which led to him losing the second round.

His head coach Andreas posted a video of him back to training and preparing for his upcoming fights in the future. MMA reporter Chamatkar Sandhu shared the video by saying, ‘ No days off for Khamzat Chimaev  (via IG/AndreasTheGeneral)’
