Leon Edwards was to face Tyron Woodley before UFC London was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak
UFC star Leon Edwards highlighted the crazy travel schedule the promotion expected from him to face Tyron Woodley in America.
UFC London was expected to take place this weekend but was called off due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, Dana White had confirmed that all UFC events would go on as planned.
The UFC president claimed that some matches and venues would change in the coming weeks, and that included the London event.
Edwards was expected to face Woodley but the change in plans meant that he had to leave London in three hours and reach the US.
The 28-year-old is 18-3 in his MMA career and explained to Ariel Helwani that he had two hours to reach London before boarding a flight and jetting off to London.
Edwards also went on to say that no one told him where to go from London and that he had to reach America first.
However, he was thankful not to have boarded the flight and both America and the UK seem to be in a travel lock-down.
Travelling on such short notice without the proper team would have been a crazy decision, and it was probably a smart move he didn’t leave the UK.
Devastated at missing the fight
The Welterweight star also highlighted how upset he was at not getting the fight. Edwards claimed it was his dream to headline an event at home, and had spent a lot of time training for this clash:
“One of the biggest fights of my career. I have been dreaming of headlining an event in my home town in my home country.
“I was devastated. All day Sunday, Monday, yesterday, I was devastated. Worked for 10 weeks, spent a lot of money on camps.”
“I was fit, I was ready, I was focused. I was ready to go. To have it taken away at the last minute. I was devastated.”
Colby Covington was being named as a replacement for Edwards to face Woodley. However, all UFC fights are cancelled till UFC 249 which sees Khabib Nurmagomedov take on Tony Ferguson.
