Leon Edwards fancies himself to challenge for the UFC welterweight belt ahead of Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington
The UFC welterweight division is one of the most exciting weight classes in the promotion currently.
Kumaru Usman has left no stone unturned in his road to gold, but he has a list of very capable potential challengers. One of them is Gilbert Burns, whom he faces at UFC 258 later this month.
But what next for that division once UFC 258 is over? Many have speculated that a veteran like Jorge Masvidal, or an in-form fighter such as Colby Covington should be given a crack at the title.
Disagreeing with that notion, to no one’s surprise, is Leon Edwards. Speaking on Submission Radio earlier this week on YouTube, Edwards stated why he thinks he should be the one getting a title shot.
“Colby got knocked out, first of all, under a year ago. Masvidal got beat under a year ago. I’m on the most fight win streak in the division, apart from the champion. This is my 9th win in a row. I have done more than anyone else and it’s now my time for the title shot.”
Does Leon Edwards really deserve a UFC title shot over Jorge Masvidal?
Edwards is indeed on a hot streak at the moment. His last MMA defeat came all the way back in 2015, which was against the champion, Kamaru Usman, himself.
He is scheduled to fight rising star Khamzat Chimaev next. The fight has been postponed multiple times in the past few months.
It is now fixed to be fought at UFC Fight Night 187 in March 2021. If ‘Rocky’ can overcome the Russian-born Swedish fighter, then it would become really hard to deny his case for the title shot next.
Covington and Masvidal, meanwhile, are speculated to go against each other. Masvidal already had his title shot at UFC 251 and would probably have to overcome ‘Chaos’ to be in the discussion once again.
