Leon Edwards feels he has done much better than Colby Covington in the welterweight division
Edwards is probably a step or two away from welterweight greatness. The Brit is set to take on Nate Diaz in a 5-round non-title fight at this weekend’s UFC 263.
The 29-year old is currently ranked number 3 in the welterweight division, and is riding a beyond-impressive win streak of 8 wins.
He has not lost since going down to Kamaru Usman in December 2015, via. unanimous decision. Plus, he has never been finished in his career.
Elsewhere, UFC President Dana White revealed that Colby Covington, the number 1 ranked welterweight contender will be getting the title shot next, and the winner of the Diaz-Edwards bout might have to fight the winner of Covington vs Kamaru Usman.
In a recent interview with Jimmy Smith of ESPN MMA, Edwards sounded irate about White giving Covington the title shot. ‘Rocky’ claimed that he was more deserving of the title shot than Covington.
He said:
“I don’t know how Dana is justifying giving Colby the title shot next. He went out there, it was an injury to Tyron Woodley [that earned him the victory], he then sat out for over a year and demanded that he wants a title shot after just getting knocked out for the title like a fight ago.”
Leon Edwards explains his case for the title shot
Despite never coming even remotely close to a title fight, Edwards has certainly made his mark in the welterweight division. Besides having a win streak of 8, he has never been finished in his MMA career.
He has one unanimous decision loss, one split decision loss and one DQ.
In the same interview, Edwards said that he would beat Diaz on Saturday night, and then take his win streak to 9, which would make him number 3 in the list of biggest win streaks in the welterweight division.
“”I just don’t understand how they’re even considering that when I’ve been here for years, grinding my way back up from my last defeat. I went on an eight-fight win streak, soon to be nine. So, after I go out there and defeat Nate next weekend, I’ll be waiting for my title shot. If that’s the game plan – to wait it out, sit out and don’t fight, then I’ll be doing the same. I will go out there and I’ll handle my business next weekend, and I’ll wait for my shot. That’ll make it nine in a row. That’s the third-most in the whole division’s history. There’s Usman, GSP and me with the most wins, so I’ll go out there and prove my case.”
