Conor McGregor suffered a dreadful ankle break during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264
Conor McGregor stepped into the Octagon at his favourite T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, in a bid to exact revenge on Dustin Poirier.
Little did he know that he would have his left ankle broken, towards the end of the first round. It led to the match being stopped, and Poirier was awarded winner via. TKO by means of a doctor stoppage.
McGregor had started the fight as the aggressor. However, a while later in the first round he began struggling once the fight went to the ground. The Irishman had actually missed out on capitalizing on a guillotine choke.
Poirier then mauled him with a barrage of ground strikes and elbows.
This was the first time, McGregor has suffered back-to-back losses in his MMA career.
Elsewhere, forgotten middleweight Luke Rockhold who is expected to make a comeback soon to the UFC, weighed in on the trilogy between McGregor and Poirier.
Rockhold stated that he was surprised McGregor did not tighten the grip on the guillotine before going to state that McGregor would be back soon:
“I was surprised that Conor would waste that, but maybe he jumped the guillotine because he hurt his leg earlier and went to that angle. Dustin came in and wrestled, kept him on his back, and Conor needs to learn how to get up. That’s the game. But you never know, he could come back, reset, his tibia broke and that’s the fight game. People can’t predict the stuff that happens.” [via MMA Fighting]
Jeremy Stephens calls out Conor McGregor for a fight
There was a time when Jeremy Stephens and Conor McGregor were feared for their one-punch knockout power. McGregor especially was a complete fighter as well, during the mid-2010s.
However, both the fighters have faced a massive slump in recent times.
Following his recent loss to Mateusz Gamrot at UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs Moises, Stephens called out McGregor on Twitter.
“Just thinking… the true fight to make is me and Connor. He broke his ankle, someone dove for my ankle. We both like to fight and keep it standing. Both power both different. Plus I like to calve kick and have wide range of KO’s.”
