Marc Goddard seemed to call off the JP Buys vs Jacob Silva clash on Dana White’s Contender Series
UFC referee was in the line of fire after calling off the JP Buys vs Jacob Silva clash on the latest Dana White’s Contender Series.
Buys had Silva in a Guillotine Choke during the final seconds of the first round. While Silva did not tap or lose consciousness, Goddard stepped in to stop the clash.
There were a few seconds still left in the round and as Buys celebrated the win, Silva was left enraged. He argued the call and looked to be fine despite the choke from his rival. Buys was also handed a contract for his win but this was another tough call from the referee.
By GUILLOTINE 😤@Wrestling_JP locked it in with just seconds before the bell!

Fans not impressed by Goddard
The British referee has made controversial calls before and spoke out about how tough it is to do the job.
He is right in sharing the problems with the job and this won’t be the first or last call from a referee that is controversial.
Early stoppages have happened several times in the past and it hurts when the stakes are high. Silva could have come out on top in the second round if the fight had gone on, but that is a moot point now.
Many UFC fans were critical of Goddard and hit out at the referee for making this mistake:
Goddard saying “it’s over “ is like the equivalent of your parents saying “because I said so” lol

It’s okay for the referee to make a mistake but use the damn instant replay! and you’ll see he’s waving his hand

Goddard is my least favorite. Acts like a jerk to the fighters constantly and for no reason

More like “by referee error”

Colby Covington is one star that has hit out at Goddard in the past. However, another star also called out the British referee.
Aljamain Sterling, who is to fight Petr Yan for the UFC Bantamweight title, also shared his anger at the call:
Why is it SO HARD for refs to admit they FUCKED UP?!?! Egos man. #DWCS

He also understood that mistakes happened but wasn’t happy with one aspect of Goddard’s game:
I don’t dislike Goddard. But he’s made some rough calls man. And he never admits when he’s made a human error, as if he isn’t human.
Buys was doing great but, damn that took away from seeing what the second RD would’ve looked like. Unfortunate for both fighters. https://t.co/59LfID5KvY
