Marc Goddard is one of the best MMA referees in the world and he holds Conor McGregor in high regard
The first PPV of 2021 for the UFC sees the return of Conor McGregor. The Irishman last fought Donald Cerrone and defeated Cowboy in a matter of seconds.
This was also his return fight after losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and The Notorious One didn’t seem to be missing a beat.
However, he has his eyes on the Lightweight gold and faces a tough opponent in Dustin Poirier. The Diamond is also coming off an impressive win over Dan Hooker.
The pair had met before with McGregor coming out on top but this is going to be in a different weight class.
This should be an incredible fight and UFC referee, Marc Goddard, spoke highly of the Irishman.
Goddard has praised McGregor in the past and highlighted just why the Irishman was such a big name in the UFC world.
“There is just something different when he fights. The attention, he is the most famous athlete that probably will ever come from MMA.
“Everybody knows him, everybody wants to see him fight. Obviously the fact that this is a rematch as well, obviously at a higher weight, it will be interesting to see what happens for sure.”
Goddard was speaking to Helen Yee and also hoped that Khabib Nurmagomedov and Henry Cejudo would come back to the UFC from their retirements.
However, McGregor vs Poirier could see the winner fight for the title. The pair are two of the biggest names in the history of the sport but the Irishman is on another level.
Although he fought only once in 2020, the gate receipts from his win over Cerrone were in the top five in terms of sales.
Chael Sonnen also named McGregor in his list of the top five fighters of the year, and it will be interesting to see the excitement levels for McGregor’s return in 2021.
