Max Holloway has been suggested to call up Dana White and be the backup for Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor 3
UFC featherweight fighter Max Holloway has been having a bit of fun after his victory against Calvin Kattar last month.
This week, Beyond the Fight podcast host, Chael Sonnen, was trying to decide what fight ‘Blessed’ could take up next.
And one of the options, according to him, was to be involved in the trilogy fight between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.
‘The Notorious One’ and ‘The Diamond’ look set to go head-to-head to complete a trilogy of fights. They met at UFC 257 where the American One, and the Irishman, of course, was the victor in their UFC 178 bout in 2014.
Holloway has fought in lightweight before. He is currently in featherweight where he could be waiting to fight the winner of Alexander Volkanovski vs Brian Ortega at UFC 260.
Sonnen suggested that if ‘Blessed’ wants to keep himself busy, then he should call Dana White and ask to be the backup of the trilogy fight.
“If… he needs a motivation to get in the gym and train, then call up Dana, and say ‘Dana, I would like to be the backup fighter [For McGregor vs Poirier 3]. I will do everything right, I will train, I will be prepared. I will fly to Fight Island, I will get on the scale’… That would be a good way to find something to do in the meantime.”
Holloway has even fought with McGregor. The two clashed at UFC Fight Night 26 in 2013 in a featherweight bout. And coincidentally, the PPV was headlined by Sonnen.
McGregor won then and it started the Irishman’s rise to fame. Holloway being a backup for the lightweight bout seems to be a good idea and it would definitely keep the Hawaiian occupied with all the free time he is going to have right now.
Holloway also recently spoke and confirmed he was willing to serve as the backup to Poirier vs McGregor 2.
