Dustin Poirier picked up a great KO victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 257 but Max Holloway wasn’t surprised at all
One big talking point from UFC 257 was Dustin Poirier picking up a KO win over Conor McGregor.
Not many expected that to happen, even if a few predicted The Diamond to get the win.
McGregor had never been knocked out in his career prior to that and seemed to be in good shape ahead of the fight.
However, Poirier had different plans as he first used some calf kicks to injure McGregor’s leg. He then used a vicious set of punches to KO the Irishman and avenge his loss to McGregor from a few years back.
Max Holloway was speaking to MMA Junkie and was asked if Poirier’s KO of McGregor had surprised him.
Holloway has faced both stars in the past and is one of the perfect people to comment on the pair. The American didn’t seem surprised at Poirier’s striking abilities and lauded him for the win:
“Not surprised at all. Dustin’s a finisher and he is a fighter. This is fight, we are in a fight with two mans in.
“Dustin’s been having some performances of his life lately and I wasn’t surprised at all. He went in there and did his thing. Congrats to him, the man went in there and did his thing. Nothing but love for him.”
While Holloway has his eyes on the Featherweight title, the UFC and Dana White are keen to set up a McGregor vs Poirier trilogy.
White believes the fight could happen this summer and it will be interesting to see how that goes. This clash might not be for the UFC Lightweight title but any fight featuring McGregor is a blockbuster event.
The UFC will make a lot of money from selling PPVs and this is a great chance for McGregor to show he has learned from this loss.
Poirier, for his part, has been calling himself as the uncrowned champion, and he could prove his title credentials again by getting the better of the Irishman.
