There is a belief that Conor McGregor might be considering retirement if he loses to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264
Conor McGregor will be facing off against Dustin Poirier this weekend in the main event of UFC 264. The fight is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas – more or less a McGregor breeding ground.
The bout surely will prove to be a career-defining one for the Irishman. A win here will put him right among the lightweight title mix. But a loss? It might spell danger.
Plus, the winner of the fight will most probably be taking on Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title.
In the wake of this, UFC Hall of Famer, Michael Bisping weighed in on McGregor’s current situation. He claimed that there might be a chance that McGregor would retire from the sport.
Speaking in his podcast Believe You Me, Bisping said:
“If he (Conor McGregor) loses, I think there’s a potential that he might retire. I really do. If he’s not going to be the champ, and that is a long way off, what is he going to do? He’ll always be the main event but is he just doing to do random fights against people that don’t mean anything? He’s made his money. He always said that he was going to get rich and get out. He’s certainly got rich. The last part is to get out. If he can’t beat Poirier and can’t fight for the belt anytime soon, then what?” (h/t Middle Easy).
There is a reason why McGregor is called ‘The Face of the Fight Game.’ His very presence has brought a ton of eyeballs to the sport. He backs up his brash and arrogant persona inside the Octagon as well. One of the elites who talk the talk and walk the walk.
In a recent episode of the Schmozone podcast, UFC bantamweight star Sean O’Malley revealed he has learnt a lot from the Irishman.
He said:
“I have learnt a lot from Conor…How he handles pressure, I think I naturally did a lot of those things good. But he’s definetely helped me improve in those areas.”
It is worth noting that, Sean O’Malley kicks off the main card at UFC 264. He takes on Kris Moutinho who took the fight on short notice.
