Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor 2 should take place in January 2021 and Michael Chandler doesn’t want to see a Lightweight fight

The UFC finally heard Dustin Poirier and set up his next fight which is against Conor McGregor.

This is the second time the pair will meet in the UFC with McGregor getting the better of the Diamond in their previous outing.

Poirier lost that Featherweight fight but the pair have moved up to the Lightweight division. There are talks that the clash could also take place at 170lbs, the Welterweight division, and Michael Chandler shared his thoughts on the same.

The three-time Bellator champion is the UFC’s newest signing and he is acting as the stand-by for the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaethje clash at UFC 254.

Chandler was speaking to Helen Yee and explained why the two big names should meet at 170 and not 155:

“It is very interesting. They fought two weight classes lower the last time at 145, which is crazy to think these guys are fighting 170 now.

“I am actually a fan of this. I am a fan of fighting 155ers at 170. It is kind of the approach that ‘hey, we are basically the same size, why don’t we just forego the 15lbs of water we are going to cut’.

“If I knew if it wasn’t going to mess with my title chances, I would love to fight Tony Ferguson at 170.

“I think we are going to be the same weight anyway, why not just not cut that last 10-15lbs of water.”

Not messing up my chances of gold

The main talking point for Chandler was if fighting in another division didn’t hurt his chances for gold, he would be open to doing that.

“At the end of it, the most important thing for me is the road to the title. If I need to make 155, championship weight, whenever I fight em, I will do it but I am not a big fan of cutting weight.”

Chandler is a big name for the UFC and he is yet to fight his first clash for the promotion. The former Bellator star admitted he wanted to fight Tony Ferguson or even Poirier but El Cucuy turned him down.

Chandler added that it was fine for Ferguson to turn him down and claimed that this was the best time to get into the UFC too.
