Michael Chiesa succumbed to a first-round loss at UFC 265
Michael “The Maverick” Chiesa came into the fight against Vicente Luque, brimming with confidence.
However, the 33-year old couldn’t get past the first round, after he fell to a submission loss against Luque due to a D’Arce choke.
It was Chiesa who had the upper hand initially. The experienced welterweight almost had the guillotine locked in (80 percent as Luque revealed later), but was unable to tighten the grip, even as Luque went for a stunning reversal.
Once Luque went for the D’Arce choke, all he needed was to close his hips, so that Chiesa wouldn’t be able to turn. He did that. And, Chiesa tapped, ending his four-fight win streak.
This was Chiesa’s first defeat in more than 3 years. Luque, on the other hand, extended his win streak to four.
Following his loss, Chiesa posted a classy message lauding Luque on his victory, while also explaining the disappointment at his loss.
He tweeted:
“I want ot jump out in front of this now. First and most importantly, congrats to Vicente Luque, he’s a stone cold killer and a class act. I look forward to seeing what’s next for him. It was an honor sharing the Octagon with him.”
Chiesa also revealed that he has always turned things around, whenever he has come up short. The Colorado-based man vowed to come back stronger.
He wrote:
“Historically, throughout my career, every time I have faced adversity and came up short, I’ve turned around and grown tremendously. A couple more wins and I’ll be back in the mix. The goal remains the same, my belief is still just as strong and I love every single person that supports me so much that it hurts.”
Hope Chiesa recovers and gets back soon!
