‘The Stockton Slugger’ Nate Diaz is probably one step away from a title fight

Nate Diaz returns to action this weekend at UFC 263. He will be taking on the seasoned Leon Edwards in a 5-round non-title fight ( a first in UFC history).

This will be ‘The Stockton Slugger’s first fight since November 2019 when he faced Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244 for the BMF Title. He lost the fight via. TKO due to a doctor stoppage.

More recently, UFC President Dana White recently revealed that the winner of Diaz-Edwards would be next in line after Colby Covington’s title fight, which effectively means that the winner of Diaz-Edwards will be fighting the winner of Covington vs Kamaru Usman.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Diaz made a bold claim that he would still fight for the title if he ends up on the losing side.

“I don’t care if I lose, I’m (still) fighting for the title. The plan is win here and then we’ll see who’s next for me. … I’m rolling with the punches right now, but whatever I’m going to do it’s going to be bigger than anything anybody is going to do.” [via Rolling Stone]

It is not easy finishing Nate Diaz

Diaz has been in the sport since 2004. He has fought 32 battles since his debut, and has been finished just once – against Michael Johnson at UFC on Fox: Henderson vs Melendez.

However, Diaz still claims that the fight was stopped way too early by the referee partly because his brother Nick Diaz had thrown in the towel.

Edwards, on the other hand, is determined to earn a stoppage win over Diaz. In a recent interview with Farah Hannoun of MMA Junkie, Edward exclaimed:

“He’s only been stopped once, and that’s all I need. He’s been stopped. He’s not no robot. He’s not no invincible man. He has been stopped…And I truly believe I will go out there and stop him again, and I cannot wait.”
