Cody Garbrandt and Petr Yan almost came to blows recently
Newly crowned UFC Bantamweight champion Petr Yan has hit out at Cody Garbrandt on social media.
Garbrandt is a former Bantamweight champion himself and knocked out Raphael Assuncao in impressive fashion.
There were talks of him fighting for the Bantamweight title vacated by Henry Cejudo. However, Yan clashed against Jose Aldo for the title.
It was Yan who got the win over Aldo after a dominating display, and he has spoken about Aljamain Sterling getting the next shot.
However, Yan wasn’t too pleased with Garbrandt’s recent decision. The former champion wants a shot at Deiveson Figueiredo, who recently became the Flyweight champion.
Figueiredo defeated Joseph Benavidez in incredible fashion and Garbrandt would have to go a division down.
While that would be a great fight, Yan has hit out at Garbrandt and even suggested that the American didn’t have the “balls” to fight him:
While Garbrandt moving a division down is interesting, it does open the title scene in the Flyweight division.
The Bantamweight division is stacked with a ton of top stars, and Garbrandt would have had to wait for a shot.
However, moving to the Flyweight division should give him a quicker shot at the title. Yan, for his part, was excellent against Aldo, but there have been questions if he deserved a shot at the title given that he didn’t fight too many top talents.
Sterling has been waiting in the wings but Dana White isn’t sure of giving the Funk Master a shot at the title.
Cejudo’s decision to vacate the titles opened a lot of opportunities. Yan has to cement his legacy as a UFC champion and it will be interesting to see who is next for him.
